Fourth Generation: Larry Schuler

In 2007, Hans' oldest son, Larry, was named President of Schuler's Restaurant of Marshall. Throughout his career, Larry has carried on the family tradition in the restaurant business by owning and managing operations both in and outside of Marshall.

A graduate of Marshall High School in 1978, Larry completed his education at Albion College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

Encouraged by his grandfather, Win Schuler, and his father, Hans, Larry pursued a broad, well-rounded work experience in the field of hospitality management before returning to the family business. Perhaps hearkening to the Centennial Room Famous Saying, "In Vino Veritas (In wine there is truth)," Larry joined Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa, California, in 1982. There, during the vintage season, he served an internship that encompassed the entire viticulture and wine making process.

Larry was subsequently employed as part of the start-up team for the then-new Westin Hotel Dallas Galleria, serving as Restaurant Manager in three theme restaurants. He also held the position of Assistant Food and Beverage Manager for the 440-room luxury hotel, overseeing food and beverage sales of eight million dollars per year.

Larry returned to Michigan in the mid-'80s to serve as Vice President of Schuler's Incorporated, and over the years has become an acknowledged leader in the industry. He owned the Schuler's Restaurant in Stevensville and founded Schu's Fresh Market Café in Grand Rapids, a hot new concept in dining during the late '90s.

Perhaps most importantly, and as part of an evolving family business, Larry decided to launch a casual theme restaurant in downtown St. Joe called "Schu's Grill and Bar." The more relaxed atmosphere along with a deliciously contemporary menu was and is a welcome addition to the area, and has been a strong player in the area‟s promotional arena.

August of 1995 brought a whole new dimension to Schu's Restaurants, Inc. with the sponsorship of Schu's International Triathlon under the non-profit organization founded by Larry Schuler known as West Michigan Athletic Ventures, Inc. The internationally recognized race was joined by Whirlpool Home appliances as the title sponsor the following year. This event carried a $30,000 purse for which 700 amateur athletes and 60 of the world's top male and female pros vied for the U.S. Pro Championship.

The casual, fun ambiance at Schu's Grill and Bar along with its refreshingly contemporary bill of fare and libations reflects the desires of its customers. "At Schu's, our motto is 'Great food, great view, just add friends,' which pretty much says it all," observes Larry. Weather permitting, the patio offers a fabulous al fresco experience. S.O.S. (Schu's on Silver Beach), which offers beach-combers the opportunity for a snack, beverage or meal, has also been a welcome addition and now has outdoor seating.

In addition to Schu's and his current role in the Marshall flagship restaurant, Larry has found time to contribute to the industry and his community. Like his grandfather, he has served as President of the Michigan Restaurant Association. Other industry and civic service organization involvement includes: Chairman of the MRA Educational Foundation, Chairperson of Pacesetter United Way, and member of the National Restaurant Association. He has been a "Michiana's Make a Difference" Citizen Award winner, and is a former Trustee and current Membership Chairperson of the Berrien Community Foundation.

Larry remains an active and passionate fundraiser for the American Cancer Society after losing his wife, Molly, to a ten-year battle with cancer.

Larry is father to three children, Jenna Schuler, Kaitlin Schuler and Robby Schuler, and is married to Christa, whose children are Paige and Taylor Dickerson. Jenna, Kaitlin, and Rob have all worked as fifth generation Schulers at Schu's Grill and Bar and S.O.S. Some family traditions never change...
